Flashing Instructions for MIUI 12

All these generic flashing instructions that should generally be applicable across all Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices. However, there is a possibility that there is a variation that is unique to your device, so we strongly advise you to visit your device forums for device-specific instructions.

Installation for MIUI 12 in Recovery ROM 

The Recovery ROM’s come with a .zip file extension and can be installed either with the Local Update method from within MIUI or through the Xiaomi stock recovery method. You can also use a custom recovery like Project Orange Fox, TWRP for installing these ROMs, and note that device-specific instructions might differ in that case.

  1. Updating In Native Method (Local):
    1. Transfer the downloaded .zip file to your internal phone memory, and ensure you place the file in the “downloaded_rom” folder in the internal storage of your device. If no such folder exists, create one in your internal storage base directory.
    2. In your phone, navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update, and then press the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, and then select “Choose Update Package”.
    3. If you don’t see the Choose “Update Package” option and you feel it is missing, then tap on the MIUI logo 10 times to activate the extra options.
    4. Then Choose the downloaded .zip file.
    5. Wait for the update to install.
  2. Recovery method:
    1. Rename the downloaded MIUI .zip file to update.zip and transfer it to the root directory of your phone’s internal storage.
    2. Then Reboot your phone into recovery mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and the Volume Up buttons together.
    3. Or, navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update, and then press the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, and then select Reboot to Recovery Mode.
    4. Scroll to the “update.zip” option using the volume keys, and then select the option using the power button.
    5. Wait for the update to install.
    6. At last, choose the “Reboot” option if your phone does not reboot by itself after installation is completed.

Fastboot ROM Installation for MIUI 12

All the MIUI Fastboot ROMs come with a .tgz file extension and requires only a Windows computer for the installation, as well as a phone with an unlocked bootloader. 

  1. Download the MiFlash Tool on your Windows PC. You can find the latest version in Step 1 of this link. Once downloaded, extract the tool and install it. You have to install ADB and Fastboot installed to perform.
  2. Reboot your phone into Download mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and Volume Down buttons together.
  3. Connect your mobile to the computer through USB cable.
  4. Download the Fastboot ROM .tgz file and extract it. Now you have to copy the address of the file as you have to mention the address of the location in the MiFlash tool.
  5. Now Run MiFlash Tool on your Windows PC and in the address bar within the tool, paste the extract location from Step 4.
  6. Click “Refresh” in MiFlash. So, the app can automatically recognize your device.
  7. Then click “Run” on MiFlash to flash the ROM file to the device.
  8. The progress bar on MiFlash will turn green, which indicates that the ROM was successfully installed. Your device should boot automatically to the new version.
